Norway is called a welfare state because the government, both federal and local, has primary responsibility for the inhabitants’ standard of living, education and health care. Public benefits are offered to all, and are mostly funded through general tax revenues.
Parental benefit
Parents who adopt are, as parents who get biological children, entitled to parental benefit to ensure the family`s income when they stay together at home with their child. The parents will split the benefit period. The total benefit period is 49 weeks at 100 % of the basis for parental benefit or 59 weeks at 80% coverage.
Parents will also get financial support every month from the Authorities, until the child is 18 years old.
Kindergarten is supported by the authorities, but not free of charge.
